Dear Teachers,

Because we live in a world of many prejudices and injustices to our fellow man, I am inspired and very committed as an educator to help the next generation understand that all people, regardless of race, religion, sexual preference, education, disabilities and financial status are entitled to be treated equally and with respect.

I encourage you all to use this Reading Ladder to inform your students about the importance of understanding prejudice. We as educators, must inform students about equality. Teachers are a huge influence and role model to their students. We must take advantage of this role to show each student how they are no different than one another.

In my current courses we focus on the importance of diversity.  Each student comes from a different background. It is important to make sure you understand your students to better fit their learning and social needs.

In our country there are many hate crimes. Children learn through their peers and role models about different ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and many more differences in people.  Unfortunately, some children are taught that some religions or ethnicities are superior to others. They have misconceptions that money makes someone superior or skin color. It is our job as educators to show children that there is no reason to dislike or even more sadly, hate people based on their ethnicity or religious views. We must teach the future generation to be understanding of differences so we can end hate crimes in the generations to come.

It is time for children to be aware that no one is superior to anyone else. I daresay, there

are parents of children who need to be educated as well. Children want to learn how the world works. They are curious and open to understanding more so than their caregivers. Teachers have more influence than most family members and parents of children. My reading ladder is an important tool that identifies prejudices and teaches why they must disappear altogether. My hope is that everyone on this planet will embrace diversity and share the knowledge of equality for all mankind.

In this reading ladder there are many different texts that provide insight to the feeling of others of many different ethnicities. I also included a non-fiction text that shows the appalling murder of Emitt Till, an innocent African American boy. My goal with this ladder is to inform young people of the importance of equality and to continue to progress the conversation about the importance of diversity and mutual respect around the globe.
