DRAFT-Sydney Turner- Diversity

In class book: Feathers

Theme: Diversity

Picture Books:

1. Happy In Our Skin by Fran Manushikin

This book is about loving who you are and where you come from. This connects with “Feathers” because Jesus Boy should have stood up for his culture and the other students should have accepted him no matter the skin color difference. I chose this book because it is easy for young children to read and understand the concept of diversity.

2. One Family by George Shannon

I chose this book because it is appropriate for young grade levels to understand that their are different cultures and skin colors in the world but no matter what we treat everyone the same. No matter the race we all love one another as family. This book is cute and kids can learn a lot from it.

3. Same, Same But Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki

This book is about two kids writing back and forth as pen pals from different country. They learn that although they may be different in where they come from they still are the same at heart. Both of the kids enjoy the same activities and believe in the same concepts of life. I can relate this to “Feathers” because once the students find out that Jesus Boy comes from an African American family they start to accept them more which shouldn’t be the case. All students should have an open mind and not judge a book by its cover.
