DRAFT – Shadona Smith – Diversity

Ten Things I Hate About Me by Randa Abdel-Fattah

I chose this book because the main character is a Muslim teenager who is living two different lifestyles, one around her friends and the other around her family.  There is so much focus in the world on events surrounding the Middle East, I though that this book would help young adults who may encounter people who are Muslim, and read how there are similarities despite coming from a different culture.

Donovan’s Double Trouble by Monalisa DeGross

I chose this book because the diversity topic centers around a young boy whose uncle was injured fighting as a soldier in the war.  The main character is at a stage where he wants to achieve and fit in around his peers at school but struggles with his studies and with his uncles disability.

Round is a Mooncake by Jenny Thong

I chose this book because it centers around a young Chinese girl who explores her neighborhood and notices the different shapes that she sees.  This book focuses not only on diversity in objects but also between Chinese and American cultures.
