Part of completing the Course Basics badging pathway is to read the course syllabus and to respond to it by commenting on this post. As you read the syllabus, what questions arose for you? What are you uncertain about or find confusing? In your comment below, write 2 – 3 questions that you still have about the course, course content, course organization, etc.
Course Questions | Day One
Hi Professor Banks,
All of my questions were answered in class. However, I thought of two more so that this assignment would be complete.
1. How have some of your previous students rated your class? To them, was it difficult or
pretty straight forward?
2. In your opinion, how will this class aid me in the Interior Design field?
2.
Jacinta, those are good questions. This is a brand new course at ECU, so we’re all struggling a bit to make sure we’re doing what we need to to meet the course outcomes and goals, but that means I don’t have this course to rely on. My courses tend to be divided in thirds: ⅓ think I’m funny, helpful, and while I have high standards, the students say I help them meet them; ⅓ think I’m “too hard” but a nice person; and ⅓ of students just really don’t seem to like me — my jokes are not funny, they think I’m a jerk/stuck-up/self-involved or some other adjective, and they don’t like the projects I assign. I tend not to think I’m the latter, but different stroke for different folks. One thing that students probably think is that I don’t explain things or give enough direct instruction. I do tend to let students ask questions as they need to and then sometimes will check in on them F2F or by email to see if they’re okay, but I’m not a big “hand holder” … I just wouldn’t want anyone constantly checking in on me, so I tend to respect others in similar ways. But if you need/want more feedback/check-ins, you tell me and I’ll accommodate! 🙂
As for those this course will help you with your field … I’m not sure I know that much about what ID does, day to day, but I know that the citation badge (APA Ninja) will be important for your Writing Intensive major courses — they will expect you to know all that already — and you’ll need to do research, so there’s that. I also think that some of the badges — like Digital Ed and Ed Hacker — give you a chance to think about your major different and to use some of your design skills/knowledge in the project since it’s not all just “write a paper” … does that make sense?
Are the badges completed in class? If not then what are we using laptops and smartphones for during class? Also, will writing pieces all be submitted online?
Yes, each class period will be a workshop, for the most part, so you’ll need to access information online and sometimes submit your material for review. Just as often, you’ll end up finishing at home and need to submit your Credly work there, but you’ll still be working on projects in class. I assume everyone will want to read their books at home or on their own time and use class time for writing and feedback activities.
1. For the social justice badge, since one of the events we are recommended to attend is not until March, will we be penalized for not completing our homework for January 19th?
2. What is your attendance policy. I didn’t not see it on the syllabus, maybe I missed it, but what are your rules and regulations?
1 – In that case, you might choose to work on the social justice badge as you last badge. Or you might plan to finish it later. OR, just let me know and we can negotiate that for you. I’d want you to be able to go to the activity/event that works best for you, so I can be flexible.
2 – I expect students to attend class every day and work during class. I’ll take role and you will typically write an “exit slip” as part of class — the slip lets me help with any lingering questions you may have and keeps me up to date on what you worked on during class. Attendance, however, will mostly be used to reflect your minus or plus. So if you do the badges for a B and you have great attendance, then you’ll likely have a B+; if you do the badge work for a B and never come to class, then you’ll at best have a B-. As a good rule of thumb, do not miss more than 4 class periods and you should be good.
Questions
1. How much time should we dedicate to this class actually outside of class time?
2. How long will it take to actually complete a badge?
If we complete all of our badges before the last day of class, will we still be required to come to class?
Hello prof. Banks the two questions that I have are, will the papers we submit be graded toward our final grade? And if we complete all the required badges and the extra ones do we need to come to class? Thank you
Johnny Mitchell
Professor Banks,
MY questions are:
1. What exactly does the attendance policy entail?
2. How much money are we going to spend on textbooks?
3. Why do we need colored pencils?
1. Would there be any incentive to completing more than 5 badges?
2. How much time outside of class is recommended for an A?
Professor Banks,
My questions regarding the syllabus are:
1. Do we have specific badges to complete after the 3 required or do we create our own pathway?
2. Is attendance mandatory everyday? Are we allowed any before our grade drops?
3. What will we use colored pencils for?
Question 1: What happens if a students completed all their badges early ?
Question 2: What assignments will require us to work in groups ?
Hello Professor Banks,
Can we complete badges ahead of time?
How much time do we have to complete a badge?
My questions from the syllabus include:
1) Can we work on the badges on our own time? Or only in class?
2) How will the grading be for each badge?
*These question were answered in class the first day.
Can we work on the optional badges while were working on required badges?
Are the only assignments we have in this class is to complete our badges?
What is the typical grade most students receive from your class?
1. Which badge do you think will be the most beneficial to complete outside of the three required badges?
2. Which badge will help me the most in the Hospitality Management career field?
I have two questions about the class.
1. After assignments are graded, will we receive comments or feedback on our work?
2. As a music major, all of my writing intensive classes have required citations in MLA format. I have no experience using A PA. Will there be instruction provided for those who have little to no experience with this format?
Can we working on multiple badges at the same time?
You said in class that all writing intensive classes had a certain amount of written work that had to be completed (I think roughly 15 pages of written work). Will the minimum three badges completely cover that much material or will doing the three required badges plus two, fulfill the 15 page work requirement?
Professor Banks,
1. What is your favorite class to teach here at ECU, and how long have you been teaching?
2. Where did you receive your education from?
-Abby Murphy
Will we be working on our badges the whole class period, every period?
Will you have the final say if we completed a badge or not based on work quality or computer error?
I am a little confused on the badging model of assessment. What will it take to earn a badge? Also, how much is attendance worth?
Do all of the badges have certain deadlines already created or is the class set up so that it doesn’t matter which badge we choose, just that the first badge is due by a specified date, the second by another specified date, etc.?
1. Will my lack of computer skills hinder my performance in this class?
2. Do you believe this class will help my ability to advance in IDIS courses in the aspect of technology?
I use my phone only is that ok? Can we stick to paper and pencil until something has to be submitted? The badge thing is still over all confusing
