Making Literacy – Level Two
0 Points
Now that you’ve developed a working definition of literacy, let’s start expanding what that might mean a bit by engaging texts from the Maker Movement. This challenge lets you think about literacy beyond books and words.
- Watch Chakrabati’s TED Talk “Literacy Is Not Enough” and write a 100 word summary of the talk: what is his central premise (thesis/point)? what examples does he offer to back up that point?
- Read one of the following books: The Art of Tinkering or The Maker Movement Manifesto. Locate and read two reviews of the book, and then write your own 400 – 500 word review focusing on one or two elements of the book that the other reviews do not mention. Remember to include PDFs of the book reviews, as well as your review, in the Google Doc folder for this badging pathway.
- Choose one of the following “making” projects to construct/build/make:
- How to Bind Your Own Book
- A Star Wars FN-2199 First Order Riot Baton
- An Easy Desk Organizer
- An Easy Crochet Dishcloth
- Or another Instructable that you find more interesting.
- Notice, as you build/make/craft/create, what sort of reading and writing practices you are using; think back to the book you read. Take pictures as you create/make to document your process. Create a list of “What I’ve learned?” or “What would someone need to know to do this well?” Include the pictures and the lists in your Google drive evidence folder along with the book review materials when you claim this badge.
