Making Literacy – Level Three

0 Points

Now that you’ve had some practice with basic “making” or DIY projects, you’ll want to figure out how to take your making to the next level and extend your knowledge of your chosen craft.

  1. Having finished your first basic “make” project, look for another project that is slightly more difficult but is part of the same genre of craft. For example, if you chose to make  simple crochet dishcloth, look for a more difficult crochet project to complete for Level Three; if you chose to build with PVC initially, look for slightly more difficult PVC work for a new project.
  2. As you’re building/crafting/tinkering with your new project, record video of moments when you struggle. What makes those moments difficult? Is there a “secret” that, if you’d known, you could have done it more easily or quickly? What sort of “insider knowledge” are you developing about your craft (fabric, material, etc).
  3. Is there someone you could look to as a “mentor” for this sort of craft/making project? Do you know someone with background, knowledge, or experience doing this sort of work that you could use as a resource? If so, interview them to find out what they know. If not, skip to four.
  4. If you don’t know a person or people who can mentor you, what sort of mentorship is available online? What kinds of websites, videos, etc., have helped you with your making?
  5. To finish this badging pathway, identify at least two – three “literacies” that are important when you’re working with your craft. Think back to the books you read and the videos you watched to help you think about “literacies.”  Create a brief, 3 – 4 minute video in which you show your craft/making project and explain the literacy practices that are important for this sort of craft/make. Remember to include your script and storyboards (if applicable) in your Google Drive folder for this badging pathway.
