One of the most basic concepts in academic environments is that of citation: attributing credit where it is due and in ways that allow other writers/readers to find and validate information is essential to forwarding knowledge in an academic setting. While a newspaper or newsmagazine may employ staff to “fact check” their writers articles, a non-profit space like academics requires that individuals ethically and responsibly reference ideas by attributing them to their correct sources.

  1. Write a 250-300 word blog post in which to discuss your experiences with research and citation (MLA, APA, Chicago, whatever). Read the ECU statement on Academic Integrity and watch this video from ECU professors on citing sources. What questions do you still have about when and how to cite information? How do you know if something is “general knowledge” or “special knowledge”? Why does that matter?
  2. Complete ECU’s “Library 101” module. Remember to put a copy of the results of your quiz in your Google Docs folder for this badging pathway.
