I was introduced to citations in high school when I began to write research papers using information from sources other than myself. My teachers always stressed the importance of citing our resources because if we didn’t then that would be considered a form of plagiarism. They also told students that citing our sources would be a major deal in our college classes. I am appreciative of my high school teachers embedding how to cite sources within us because it plays a major role in majority of my assignments. I was never taught how to manually cite sources however. In high school we were told to use sonofcitationmachine which is a website that will cite your sources for you in any way that you want. You have to provide them the information from your source like the author, book title, etc. Once you do this they will format your source correctly. In high school we always used MLA citation. Once I attended my first semester of college, I was introduced to APA citation. My freshman English professor was very strict on citing in APA format correctly because so many students had not used it before in their college years. We spent an ample amount of time learning how to use APA citation correctly. It was very frustrating because it was so easy to make mistakes when using APA citations back then since none of us were familiar with it. I often was confused on when citation was needed verse when it wasn’t. Now, I would say the difference between general knowledge and special knowledge is whether or not you actually pulled the information from a specific source. If I was to include general knowledge from my thoughts, I would not cite it.
